A SHORT HISTORY OF
GORDON ADVANCED MOTORISTS
During 1983, Algy Watson, Allan Moir, Walter Mitchell and Wendy Bruce, members of Aberdeen City Advanced Motorist Group, decided that there was a large area not covered by the City Group and that there was a need for such a group in the County.
On Thursday, 22nd September, 1983 a meeting was held in Inverurie Academy to establish the need for a Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists in the Gordon District of Aberdeenshire. Although the numbers were not as great as hoped, there was sufficient interest to set a date for an inaugural meeting. Leaflets were made up and notices posted in the local paper (a copy of the leaflet has survived). On 25th October 1983, the inaugural meeting was held in the Wyness Hall, Inverurie and a committee formed.
A subscription of £2.50 was set for full Members and Associate Members. Associate Members were those who were under instruction to become Advanced Drivers. It was agreed that the Group should hold monthly meetings, consisting of social, as well as driving related outings. 1983 saw the first Better Driving Course which attracted 25 people.
The Group’s determination to become established in the area was rewarded in July 1984 when the Institute of Advanced Motorists Chief Executive, Bob Peters, confirmed Gordon as a Group of the IAM.
